Mixing using venturi pumps:
Using a Vacuum pump as a Proportioning or Mixing Pump
Description
Many industrial processes involve the mixing of various liquids and/or liquids and powders in specific proportions. Often, this mixing is done manually using mixing tanks, pumps, scoops, buckets, and hoses, and can be quite time consuming, cumbersome and even dangerous. Vaccon J series vacuum pumps, thanks to their robust, all metal construction and ability to ingest a variety of materials without experiencing damage, can be used as a mixing/proportioning device that eliminates mixing tanks and much of the manual labor associated with many mixing/proportioning processes.
Problem
Mixing two liquids, or mixing a liquid and a powder, typically involves the use of one or several pumps, a mixing tank, transfer hoses, a holding tank and perhaps even a number of scoops or buckets.
Quite often, liquids are pumped into a mixing tank with an attendant manually controlling the amount of each liquid added. In cases where a liquid is mixed with a powder, the powder is often manually added to the mixing tank using scoops or buckets, with the liquid pumped in and agitated to mix the two “ingredients.”
Although mixing operations like those described above will get the job done, they are time consuming and prone to messy spills due to manual measuring, scooping and loading. In addition, the mixing tanks may require frequent cleaning, and there is a high chance of worker injury caused by the lifting and dumping of heavy liquids and/or powders.
Solution – Vaccon J Series Vacuum Pumps
Vaccon’s J series vacuum pumps make excellent mixing units for a wide variety of liquids and powders. Using a J series pump as a mixing unit typically enables the user to eliminate the mixing tank and the cleaning that comes with it, as well as eliminate much of the manual aspect of the mixing operation.
To use the J series pump as a mixing unit, the liquid that will be used in the smaller proportion is plumbed into the supply port of the pump – this liquid becomes the motive force used to “power” the J series pump. Often, one of the pumps used in the old set-up to pump liquids into a mixing tank can be used to pump this liquid into the J series pump. If this liquid is water, a pump may not even be needed because the pressure from an ordinary faucet is usually sufficient to power the J series.
The second liquid – the liquid that will be used in larger proportions – is drawn into the pump through the vacuum port, where it is mixed with the liquid entering the unit through the supply port. The mixed fluids exit the J series pump via the exhaust port and can be piped directly into a holding tank, or on to the next process requiring the mixed fluids.
In cases where a liquid is to be mixed with a powder, the powder is drawn into the pump via the vacuum port. Once inside the J series pump, it mixes with the liquid entering the pump through the supply port and the mixture flows out of the pump through the exhaust port.
The proportion of the materials mixed in the pump is controlled in several ways. Regulating the inlet pressure controls the amount of the motive liquid entering the pump through the supply port. The amount of liquid or powder entering the pump via the vacuum port can be controlled by using a simple needle valve installed in the feeder tube between the pump and liquid supply.
